University of Illinois Chicago Police Department announces distracted driving enforcement results

(Chicago, IL) - The University of Illinois Chicago Police Department (UICPD) announced it issued nine citations for handsfree law violations, one arrest for Driving while License Suspended/No Valid Driver’s License, one arrest for Resist / Obstruct a Police Officer where the driver was also cited for Disobeying a Traffic Control Signal and Illegal Transportation of Alcohol. Officers also made one arrest for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Theft of Lost or Mislaid Property, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin and Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine. In addition, the driver was cited for the Use of an Electronic Communication Device while Driving, Operating an Uninsured Vehicle, Unlawful Display of Registration Plate, and Unlawful Possession of Registration Plate.

Officers stopped 40 vehicles and issued 19 citations for other traffic related offences during the April distracted driving enforcement period.

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed UICPD to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior,” said Captain Stanley Grice, UICPD captain of operations.

The UICPD joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort.

Using your phone in anything other than handsfree mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, but also illegal. Break the cycle. Drop it and drive.

The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
