UICPD recognizes the importance of mental health and supports the wellness of every individual within the UIC community and its surrounding neighborhoods. We believe that compassionate support and access to appropriate resources are essential elements in order to foster a safe and healthy work and learning environment. We prioritize the wellness and safety of individuals in crisis and survivors of various situations. We also strive to create an environment where individuals are heard, validated and supported during challenging times and our therapy dog program is part of that commitment.

Therapy Dog Program
In our continuous efforts to enhance mental health advocacy, UIC has implemented a therapy dog program. The presence of a therapy dog has proven to be immensely beneficial in reducing stress, alleviating anxiety and offering a calming companion when needed. The program also serves as a bridge between our officers and UIC community members by helping to create a welcoming and non-intimidating atmosphere where individuals can express themselves more openly and comfortably.
UICPD works to promote mental wellness, resilience, and recovery for all members of our community. By advocating for mental health, prioritizing persons in crisis, and recognizing the needs of survivors, we are committed to building a safer and more compassionate community. Our therapy dog program is just one of the ways we demonstrate this commitment by offering a unique and valuable resource to support individuals in their pursuit of overall mental wellness.
About Pawfficer Ham
Pawfficer Ham was born on November 28, 2021, and is a male Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd mix. As UIC’s dedicated comfort dog, he has received specialized training to provide emotional support, companionship and comfort to students, faculty and staff. With his gentle demeanor, intuitive nature and friendly spirit, Pawfficer Ham helps create meaningful connections that can reduce stress, boost morale and support overall well-being.
Pawfficer Ham joined the UIC community in November 2023 from Sit Service Dogs, an organization that specializes in the breeding, training and placement of service dogs. Before being placed with a client, dogs complete an extensive training program that can take between 6 and 18 months.
Since arriving at UIC, Pawfficer Ham has become a valued member of the UIC Police Department, bringing comfort, encouragement and plenty of smiles wherever he goes. Whether attending campus events, supporting wellness initiatives or simply offering a wagging tail and friendly greeting, Pawfficer Ham is proud to serve the UIC community and make a pawsitive difference with every interaction.

We understand the importance of accommodating various requests and strive to meet the needs of those seeking therapy dog services, however, it is important to note that Pawfficer Ham, just like any other working companion, requires adequate rest and care to ensure his own well-being and effectiveness.
