University of Illinois Chicago Police Department announces distracted driving enforcement results

FOR RELEASE: May 2024

(Chicago, IL.) The University of Illinois Chicago Police Department (UICPD) announced it issued one hundred and ten citations for hands-free law violations, three arrests for Driving while License Suspended/No Valid Driver’s License, one arrest for Failure to Register (Violation of Child Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth) and Driving with No Valid Driver's License. Officers also made one arrest for Disobeying Stop Sign, Illegal Possession of Cannabis by Driver, Possession of Cannabis 30-100 grams, and DUI A4.

Officers stopped 232 vehicles and issued 45 citations for other traffic related offenses during April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month enforcement campaign.

“Driver distraction is a persistent issue in Chicago that often has life-altering consequences,” said Justin Wooden, captain of internal affairs and community outreach. “Issuing a citation is a proven way to get motorists to pay attention or pay the price. Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over, but we will continue our efforts to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior.”

UICPD joined forces with the Illinois State Police, local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort.

The Illinois distracted driving campaign was funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
