Accrediation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

An assessor from the Commission on Accrediation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive August 26th to examine aspects of the University of Illinois at Chicago Police Department's policies, procedures, management, operations and support services. Verification by the assessor that the University of Illinois at Chicago Police department meets the commission's state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accrediation. Such recognition is a highly praised acknowledgement of public safety professional excellence.


As part of the on-site assesment, agency personnel and member of the community are invited to offer comments by telephoning the assesssor on Monday August 27th from 2 p.m. to 4p.m., at (312) 666-5295. All telephone comments are limited to 10 inutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA Standards. A copy of the standards is available at the university of Illinois at Chicago Polce department. Contact Sgt. Joanne Nee at (312) 355-3236

The agency has to comply with 97 standards in order to gain recognized status. The assessor is Mr. Jefery D. Stewart. Once the CALEA assessor completes his review of the agency, he will report back to the full commission which will then decide if the agency is to be granted recognition status. Recognition is for three years, during which the agancy must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
